Correcting Someone Doesn't Make Them Dig In Deeper — Here's What Actually Happens
If you've spent any time in science education circles, skeptic communities, or basically any corner of the internet where misinformation is discussed, you've probably heard some version of this warning: Don't correct people too directly, or they'll just believe the wrong thing even more.
This idea — the so-called "backfire effect" — became something close to gospel truth in the 2010s. It was cited in journalism. It showed up in teacher training materials. It got TED Talks. It became the go-to explanation for why fact-checking feels pointless and why talking to your conspiracy-minded uncle at Thanksgiving never seems to help.
There's just one problem: the backfire effect, at least in the sweeping form it's usually described, doesn't hold up.
Where the Idea Came From
The concept traces back to a 2010 paper by Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler, which described a phenomenon where some participants in political experiments seemed to double down on incorrect beliefs after being shown corrective information. The paper was genuinely interesting and raised important questions about motivated reasoning.
But somewhere between the academic journal and the education blog, a nuanced, context-specific finding got transformed into a universal law of human psychology. By the time it reached most educators and communicators, it had become: Correcting misinformation always backfires. Don't bother.
That's not what the original researchers said. And it's definitely not what subsequent research found.
What the Follow-Up Science Actually Shows
In the years following that initial paper, researchers — including Nyhan and Reifler themselves — struggled to replicate the backfire effect consistently. A large-scale 2019 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences tested the effect across a range of political topics and found essentially no evidence of it. Corrections generally worked. People updated their beliefs, at least somewhat, when presented with accurate information.
This doesn't mean changing minds is easy. Motivated reasoning is real. Confirmation bias is real. People do tend to be more resistant to corrections on topics that are deeply tied to their identity or values. But "resistant" is very different from "makes them believe the wrong thing more strongly."
The science now suggests that corrections are, on the whole, effective — imperfect, context-dependent, and sometimes slow, but effective. The backfire effect, as a reliable, predictable phenomenon, is more myth than mechanism.
So Why Did We Believe It So Hard?
This is the part that should make any skeptic's ears perk up, because the story of how the backfire effect spread is itself a case study in how misinformation works.
First, it was a compelling narrative. The idea that correcting someone can make things worse is counterintuitive, a little ironic, and genuinely surprising — all qualities that make information stickier and more shareable. Second, it was emotionally useful. For anyone who has ever tried to debunk a flat-earther, argue with an anti-vaccine relative, or watched a fact-check get dismissed with a wave of a hand, the backfire effect offered a satisfying explanation. It's not that I failed to convince them. It's that convincing them is literally impossible. That's a comforting story, even if it lets us off the hook a little too easily.
Third, it spread through exactly the kinds of trusted channels — science journalism, educator networks, TED-adjacent content — that we're inclined to believe. When a myth arrives wearing the clothes of peer-reviewed research, it's a lot harder to catch.
What This Means for Educators and Communicators
The practical upshot here is actually encouraging: you can correct misinformation without fear that you're making it worse. The paralyzing caution that the backfire myth generated — the tiptoeing around false claims, the reluctance to directly challenge bad information — turns out to have been largely unnecessary.
That said, how you correct matters. Research consistently shows that leading with facts rather than myths, avoiding unnecessarily confrontational framing, and acknowledging the emotional or identity-based dimensions of a belief all improve outcomes. Corrections land better when they don't feel like attacks.
But the core act of saying "that's not accurate, and here's why" — done respectfully and with good evidence — is not a trap. It's not going to send someone deeper down the rabbit hole. In most cases, it's going to plant a seed, even if you don't see it sprout in real time.
The Lesson Inside the Lesson
There's something genuinely useful hiding in this whole story, and it's not about the backfire effect at all. It's about how easily even skeptically-minded communities can adopt and propagate a compelling-but-wrong idea when it comes packaged in the right way.
The backfire effect spread the same way a lot of misinformation spreads: it was surprising, emotionally resonant, socially useful, and attached to just enough legitimate science to seem credible. The fact that it took root so deeply in communities explicitly dedicated to critical thinking should give us all a moment of pause.
