And when the conversation turns to gut health or seed oils or whatever the current panic is, they lean in with the quiet authority of someone who has clearly figured it out.
Maybe that person is you. It's been me. And here's the uncomfortable truth: that feeling of having figured it out is often the clearest sign that you haven't.
This isn't about intelligence. It's about a specific trap that the democratization of online knowledge has set — one that catches smart, curious people more reliably than it catches people who never bothered to look anything up in the first place.
The Dunning-Kruger Problem Nobody Talks About
Most people have heard of the Dunning-Kruger effect — the idea that people with limited knowledge in a domain tend to overestimate their own competence. What gets less attention is why this happens to self-directed learners specifically, and why the internet has turbocharged the effect.
When you learn something through formal education — a degree program, a certification, an apprenticeship — you're constantly surrounded by people who know more than you. Your professors correct your assumptions. Your peers challenge your interpretations. You get graded. You fail tests. And because you're learning from the audience's reaction rather than from expert correction, you get reinforced for sounding confident rather than for being accurate. The more people nod along, the more certain you become. The more certain you become, the more definitively you speak. It's a feedback loop that has nothing to do with whether you're actually right.
This is how wellness influencers with no clinical training end up giving medical advice that harms people. It's how financial guys with a few good years become gurus who lead their followers into disaster. It's how every family has that one uncle who knows exactly what's wrong with the economy.
How to Reality-Test Your Own Expertise
The good news is that the same curiosity that drove you to learn in the first place can be redirected to check your own knowledge. Here are some practical ways to do it:
Seek out the strongest counterargument. Not a strawman — the actual, best-faith version of the opposing view. If you can't articulate why smart, informed people disagree with your position, you don't understand the topic well enough to teach it.
Try to explain it to a real expert. Not to impress them — to get corrected. Find someone with formal training in the area and walk them through your understanding. Pay close attention to where they wince.
Notice your certainty as a data point. High confidence in a complex domain is a flag worth investigating, not a green light to keep going. Real expertise usually comes with more hedging, not less.
Ask yourself what it would take to change your mind. If you can't answer that question, you're not engaging in learning anymore — you're engaged in belief maintenance.
Look for the boring primary sources. Peer-reviewed studies, clinical guidelines, technical textbooks. Not because they're always right, but because they'll show you how much more complicated the picture is than the YouTube version suggested.
The Smartest Thing a Learner Can Say
There's a phrase that separates genuine learners from synthetic experts: I'm not sure, but here's what I've read.
It's not glamorous. It doesn't get you the dinner party moment. But it's accurate, it's honest, and it keeps the door open for correction — which is the only way anyone actually learns anything.
The internet has done something genuinely remarkable by making knowledge accessible to everyone. But accessibility isn't the same as depth, and enthusiasm isn't the same as understanding. The most powerful thing you can do with a self-directed education is stay humble enough to keep getting one.
