The Moment You Explain Something Is the Moment You Stop Questioning It

There's a particular kind of confidence that settles in after you've explained something clearly. You've laid out the argument, walked someone through the logic, maybe even fielded a few questions. By the end, you feel solid. Grounded. Like you've got the thing down.

Here's the uncomfortable question: what if that feeling is lying to you?

Researchers who study how people form beliefs about their own knowledge have documented a phenomenon that should give anyone who loves explaining things — teachers, science communicators, your know-it-all friend on social media — genuine pause. The act of explaining doesn't just reflect your understanding. It actively shapes it. And not always in the direction of accuracy.

What the Research Actually Shows

The effect has roots in a broader literature on metacognition — the study of how well we know what we know. Decades of research have established that people are notoriously bad at accurately assessing the gaps in their own understanding. We tend to confuse familiarity with knowledge, fluency with comprehension, and the ability to describe something with the ability to actually understand it.

The explanation-specific version of this problem was explored in work on what researchers call the "illusion of explanatory depth." In a series of studies, participants were asked to rate how well they understood common objects and systems — things like how a zipper works or how a toilet flushes. Most rated their understanding as reasonably good. Then they were asked to actually explain the mechanism in detail. Confidence collapsed. People discovered, in real time, that they had been confusing a vague sense of familiarity with genuine comprehension.

But here's the twist that gets less attention: when people had recently explained something — even imperfectly — they were more resistant to that collapse. The act of having produced an explanation, even a flawed one, reinforced their sense of mastery. They felt like they'd already done the work of understanding. They were less likely to probe for what they might have missed.

In other words, explaining can function as a kind of premature closure. You've given an account. The account felt coherent. So the brain files the question away as answered.

Why This Matters for Science Communication

If you've spent any time in science communication — writing explainers, giving talks, making educational videos, running workshops — you've probably experienced the seductive clarity that comes from having a well-rehearsed explanation. You know how to frame it. You know which analogies work. You've answered the common objections enough times that they feel handled.

What you may not have noticed is how that fluency can quietly narrow your view. When you've explained something many times, you stop encountering it with fresh eyes. The questions that might destabilize your model start to feel like noise rather than signal. And because your explanation has worked — people nodded, they seemed to get it — you have social confirmation that your understanding is basically correct.

This is a real vulnerability, and it's worth taking seriously precisely because the people most likely to fall into it are the people who care most about communicating clearly. The dedicated explainer is, in some ways, more at risk than the person who never tried to teach anything.

The Social Media Amplifier

Now take this dynamic and put it on Twitter, or TikTok, or any platform where confident explanation gets rewarded with likes and shares. The incentive structure is almost perfectly designed to make things worse.

On social media, clear and confident explanations perform well. Nuanced, hedged, appropriately uncertain explanations tend to underperform. This means the people who build audiences explaining things are often the people who have most thoroughly convinced themselves — and then most confidently convinced others — that they've got it figured out.

And the feedback loop is brutal. Every time someone shares your explanation or tells you it really cleared things up, your sense of mastery deepens. The gaps in your understanding don't get smaller. They just become less visible to you.

This is part of why you'll periodically see a confident science explainer — someone with real credentials, genuine enthusiasm, and a substantial following — get something importantly wrong. Not because they're dishonest. Because the machinery of confident explanation had been running so smoothly that they stopped checking the parts.

The Useful Antidote: Explain, Then Interrogate

None of this means you should stop explaining things. Teaching and communicating are genuinely valuable, and the act of trying to explain something to others can reveal gaps in your understanding — if you pay attention to where you stumble.

The key is to treat your explanation as a starting point for inquiry rather than an endpoint. After you've explained something, ask yourself: where did I hand-wave? Where did I use an analogy that I couldn't actually defend? What question would break this explanation if someone asked it?

This is harder than it sounds. The whole point is that the explanation felt complete. You have to actively work against that feeling.

A few concrete habits that help:

Seek out the person in the room who pushes back. When you've just explained something and everyone seems satisfied, look for the person who seems slightly unconvinced. Their question is more valuable than ten nods of agreement.

Explain to someone who will ask naive questions. Kids are great for this. So are people who are genuinely new to a topic and don't know which questions they're not supposed to ask. Naive questions have a way of finding the soft spots in an explanation that expert audiences politely skip over.

Notice the phrases that signal trouble. "Basically," "essentially," "in simple terms" — these are often markers of places where you've simplified something past the point of accuracy and moved on without noticing. Go back to those spots.

Treat a good explanation as a prompt to learn more, not a reason to stop. The cleaner your explanation feels, the more important it is to ask what it's leaving out.

What This Looks Like at SkeptiCamp

At SkeptiCamp events, one of the things we try to build into workshops is structured moments of uncertainty — places where participants are explicitly invited to say "I don't actually know how this part works" after they've just finished explaining something. It feels weird at first. We're trained to project competence, especially in teaching contexts.

But what tends to happen is genuinely interesting: the admission of a gap often leads to better questions, better discussion, and ultimately better understanding — for everyone in the room, including the person who was doing the explaining.

The goal isn't to undermine confidence in knowledge. It's to make sure that confidence is earned, not just performed. And one of the most reliable ways to check whether you've earned it is to notice how you feel right after you've explained something particularly well.
