Turns Out Your Brain Is More Open-Minded Than You've Been Told

If you've spent any time in skeptic circles, you've probably heard the story. Someone encounters evidence that contradicts their deeply held belief. Instead of updating, they dig in harder. The contradictory information doesn't just fail to persuade — it backfires, leaving the person more convinced than ever. It's a compelling narrative, and it spread through pop psychology like wildfire.

There's just one problem: the original research behind it didn't hold up.

The Rise and Fall of a Really Good Story

The backfire effect was first described in a 2010 paper by political scientists Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler. Their study suggested that when people received corrections to false political beliefs, some subjects actually became more attached to the original misinformation. It was alarming, counterintuitive, and — frankly — a perfect story for the internet age.

The concept spread fast. It showed up in TED talks, teacher training materials, journalism workshops, and countless explainers about why America feels so politically divided. For a while, it seemed like the definitive answer to the frustrating question of why facts don't seem to matter anymore.

But science doesn't stop at one study, and that's kind of the whole point of how science works.

When other researchers tried to replicate the original findings — running similar experiments with larger, more diverse samples — the dramatic backfire effect mostly vanished. A 2019 review by Wood and Porter tested corrections across a wide range of politically charged topics and found that people generally did update their beliefs when given accurate information, even if they didn't do so dramatically. Nyhan himself revisited the question and acknowledged that the original effect appeared far less robust than initially reported.

So where does that leave us?

What Actually Happens When You Encounter Contradictory Evidence

Here's the more nuanced picture that's emerged from recent research: human belief updating is real, but it's messy, slow, and highly context-dependent. We're not the hopelessly irrational creatures the backfire narrative painted us as — but we're also not cold logic machines.

Several factors seem to genuinely influence whether someone can update a belief:

Identity attachment. When a belief is tightly woven into someone's sense of who they are — their political tribe, their religious community, their professional reputation — the psychological cost of changing it goes way up. You're not just updating a data point; you're threatening a piece of your self-concept. That's a much heavier lift.

The source of the correction. Research consistently shows that people are more receptive to new information when it comes from a source they already trust and feel isn't trying to humiliate them. A correction delivered with contempt is going to land very differently than one offered with genuine curiosity.

Emotional state at the moment of encounter. People who feel psychologically safe — not defensive, not cornered — are significantly more likely to genuinely consider challenging information. Stress and threat responses actively narrow our thinking.

Whether the belief has been publicly stated. Once you've told your whole family at Thanksgiving that vaccines cause autism, reversing course carries real social stakes. Private beliefs are more flexible than public ones.

The Uncomfortable Part: Updating Your Own Beliefs

Most conversations about the backfire effect focus on other people — how to get them to change their minds. But here's the thing SkeptiCamp keeps coming back to: the most important mind you'll ever try to change is your own.

And that's where this research gets genuinely useful.

If identity threat is the big obstacle, then one practical strategy is to actively separate your beliefs from your identity before you need to update them. This sounds abstract, but it has a concrete form: build a habit of saying things like "based on what I know right now, I think..." rather than "I believe..." That tiny linguistic shift keeps the door open. It signals — to yourself as much as anyone else — that your position is provisional, not permanent.

Another approach is what psychologists sometimes call "consider the opposite." Before you dismiss a piece of contradictory evidence, spend 60 seconds genuinely trying to steelman it. What would have to be true for this to be right? You don't have to agree with it. You just have to give it a real hearing. Studies suggest this simple exercise measurably reduces confirmation bias.

There's also the question of when you try to evaluate new information. If you're already frustrated, tired, or feeling attacked, your brain is in exactly the wrong state for careful reasoning. That's not weakness — that's neuroscience. Giving yourself permission to say "I want to think about this more carefully when I'm in a better headspace" isn't avoidance. It's actually pretty good epistemic hygiene.

The Skill Nobody Teaches You

Here's something worth sitting with: changing your mind gracefully is a skill, and like most skills, it improves with deliberate practice.

Our education system is pretty good at teaching people what to think about specific topics. It's considerably less focused on teaching people how to think — including how to handle the uncomfortable experience of discovering you were wrong about something. We tend to treat being wrong as a failure rather than as a normal, inevitable part of learning.

At SkeptiCamp workshops, one of the exercises we keep coming back to is asking participants to share a belief they've genuinely updated in the last year. Not a trivial preference shift, but a real change in how they understood something. The point isn't to celebrate flip-flopping — it's to normalize the experience of updating, to make it feel like intellectual growth rather than defeat.

Because that's exactly what it is.

So Is the Backfire Effect Real or Not?

The honest answer is: sometimes, in some contexts, for some people, on some topics. It's a real psychological phenomenon, but it's not the universal law of human cognition it was briefly treated as.

What the research actually supports is something more hopeful and more demanding at the same time. Humans can update their beliefs. We do it regularly. But it requires the right conditions — psychological safety, trustworthy sources, low identity threat, and a genuine cultural norm that treats changing your mind as a sign of intellectual honesty rather than weakness.

Building those conditions, in yourself and in the communities around you, is harder and slower than sharing an infographic about why facts don't work. But it's also considerably more useful.
