You Know Who Funded the Study — But Do You Know If It's True?

Ask a college student today whether they can spot a biased source, and most of them will say yes. Ask them how. They'll tell you to check who funded the research, look at the publication's political lean, see whether the author has financial ties to an industry, find out if the outlet has a known agenda.

All of that is genuinely useful. Teaching people to interrogate sources rather than accept them at face value is real progress, and it's something educators have worked hard to build over the last decade or so.

But here's the thing: a generation that's been trained to ask who is telling them something hasn't necessarily been trained to figure out whether that thing is actually true. And that gap — between identifying potential bias and evaluating actual claims — is quietly driving some of the most frustrating misinformation patterns we see today.

The Literacy We Built

Starting in the mid-2010s, digital literacy education in American schools began to shift meaningfully toward source evaluation. Lateral reading — the practice of opening new tabs to check on a source rather than diving deeper into the source itself — became a taught skill. The SIFT method (Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, Trace claims) gained traction in classrooms. Media literacy curricula expanded.

This was largely a response to a real and growing problem: the internet had made it trivially easy to dress up any claim in the visual language of legitimacy, and students were struggling to distinguish between a peer-reviewed journal and a website designed to look like one.

The source-first approach made sense as a starting point. If you know that a "study" was funded entirely by the industry it's supposed to evaluate, that's worth knowing. If a headline comes from a site with a documented history of fabricating quotes, that matters.

But somewhere along the way, for a lot of students, source evaluation became the whole game.

The Trap of the Genetic Fallacy

Logicians have a name for the mistake of judging an argument based solely on its origin: the genetic fallacy. The idea that something must be false because of where it comes from — regardless of the evidence it presents — is a logical error, not a critical thinking triumph.

When students learn that pharmaceutical companies fund drug research, that's a useful thing to know. When that knowledge becomes "therefore I don't trust anything from pharmaceutical research," something has gone wrong. The funding source is a flag for scrutiny, not a verdict.

The same applies in the other direction. An article published by an independent nonprofit with no obvious financial incentives can still be wrong. A study from a university with no industry ties can still have serious methodological problems. Source credibility is a prior probability, not a conclusion.

But the shortcut is tempting, especially in an information environment where there's simply too much to evaluate carefully. If you can sort sources into "trustworthy" and "suspect" bins quickly, you don't have to do the harder work of actually engaging with what they're saying.

What Truth Literacy Actually Requires

Evaluating whether a claim is true requires a different set of skills than evaluating where it came from. It means engaging with the substance of the evidence, not just its packaging.

Some of the moves involved:

Understanding what kind of claim is being made. Is this a claim about what happened (empirical), about what should happen (normative), or about what will happen (predictive)? Each type requires different kinds of evidence.

Asking what would have to be true for this to be wrong. This is the falsifiability question, and it's one of the most useful tools in the skeptic's kit. A claim that can't be falsified isn't really an empirical claim at all.

Looking at the quality of the evidence, not just its existence. A study with 12 participants conducted over three weeks is not the same as a meta-analysis of 40 randomized controlled trials, even if both get described as "research shows."

Checking whether the conclusion actually follows from the evidence. This is where a lot of science reporting falls apart — the data might be real, but the leap from the data to the headline is where things go sideways.

Seeking out legitimate disagreement. In most active areas of research, there's genuine scientific debate. Finding that debate, understanding what the disagreement is actually about, and tracking where the weight of evidence currently sits — that's harder than checking a funding source, but it's where the real information lives.

The Cynicism Problem

There's a version of source literacy that curdles into something unhelpful: a generalized cynicism where every institution is equally suspect, all research is assumed to be compromised, and the only trustworthy information is the kind that confirms what you already believed.

We see this pattern across the political spectrum. Someone who has learned that mainstream media can be biased concludes that all mainstream media is always biased on every topic. Someone who knows that government agencies have sometimes been wrong concludes that government agencies can never be trusted. Someone who has identified one bad actor in a field decides the entire field is corrupt.

This isn't critical thinking. It's pattern-matching dressed up as skepticism. And it leaves people just as vulnerable to bad information as they were before — just bad information from different sources.

Building the Bridge

The good news is that source literacy and truth literacy aren't in competition. They're supposed to work together. Source evaluation should be the first move in an investigation, not the last one.

The practical shift is this: when you identify a reason to be skeptical of a source, treat that as the beginning of your inquiry, not the end of it. Ask: even accounting for this potential bias, what's the actual evidence? Who else has looked at this? What do the critics of this claim say, and what do the defenders of it say back?

That's slower. It's more effortful. It doesn't fit neatly into a social media post. But it's the only version of information literacy that actually gets you to the truth — which, last we checked, is still the point.
