The person who can take dense peer-reviewed research and make it understandable and interesting for a general audience is doing something important. In a world drowning in misinformation, clear, engaging science communication is basically a public service.
But there's a version of science communication that's a little less... honest. Not dishonest on purpose, necessarily. More like a smart, articulate person who has learned that their audience trusts them, and has quietly started using that trust to venture into territory they're not actually qualified to navigate.
Knowing how to spot the difference — between legitimate interdisciplinary thinking and intellectual overreach dressed up in the same confident tone — is a genuinely useful skill. Here's what to watch for.
Red Flag #1: The Credentials Don't Match the Topic
This one sounds obvious, but it's easy to miss in practice because we tend to trust people in a general, holistic way rather than a specific one. If you've listened to someone explain neuroscience clearly for two years, your brain has filed them under "smart and trustworthy." When they pivot to explaining geopolitics or nutrition science, that trust transfers automatically — even when it probably shouldn't.
The fix isn't to dismiss everything someone says the moment they leave their home turf. Lots of great thinking happens at the intersection of fields. The fix is to consciously notice when a topic shift happens and ask yourself: does this person have meaningful training, research experience, or deep engagement with this specific subject, or are they just applying a general intelligence to something new?

When a science communicator seems to have discovered a master key that opens every door, that's the time to start asking which doors they're actually checking.
Red Flag #5: Pushback Gets Dismissed as Misunderstanding
How does your favorite science communicator respond when actual domain experts push back on their claims? This is one of the most revealing data points available.
Legitimate thinkers engage with substantive criticism. They update when the criticism is valid. They clarify when they've been misunderstood. They acknowledge when a topic is more complicated than they initially presented.
The overreach version looks different: critics are dismissed as not understanding the "bigger picture," or as being too captured by conventional thinking, or as missing the point. The communicator doubles down rather than engaging. Complexity gets waved away.
This isn't always bad faith — sometimes people genuinely believe they're right. But a consistent pattern of dismissing expert criticism without seriously engaging with it is a meaningful signal about how much epistemic humility is actually operating under the hood.
Red Flag #6: The Audience Becomes the Validation System
Popular science communicators develop large, loyal audiences. And those audiences become a feedback loop — applauding bold claims, sharing confident takes, and providing social reinforcement that can quietly replace the more demanding feedback of peer review and expert scrutiny.
Watch for communicators who cite their audience size, engagement numbers, or listener feedback as evidence that they're onto something. "Millions of people found this compelling" is not a substitute for "experts in this field reviewed this and found it accurate."
This doesn't mean popular = wrong. It means popularity is not a quality-control mechanism for factual accuracy.

None of this means you should stop listening to science podcasts or watching explainer videos. Most science communicators are genuinely trying to do right by their audiences, and the good ones are worth your time.
What it means is that your trust should be calibrated and specific rather than general and automatic. A few practical habits:
- Check the bio. What is this person's actual background in the topic they're discussing right now — not their topic in general, but this specific episode's topic?
- Look for hedging language. Does their confidence track the actual state of evidence, or does everything come out at the same certainty level?
- Search for expert responses. When a communicator makes a bold claim outside their usual field, spend five minutes looking for what actual specialists in that field have said about it.
- Notice the narrative arc. Are they following evidence wherever it leads, or does every topic seem to confirm the same thesis?
Being a thoughtful consumer of science communication isn't about cynicism — it's about maintaining the kind of active, engaged skepticism that makes the whole enterprise of learning actually work. Trust, but verify. Even the people you already like.
