Ten Questions to Ask Before You Believe That Viral Health Claim
Somewhere between your cousin's Facebook post and that influencer's Instagram story, a health claim is making its way toward you. Maybe it's a supplement that "doctors don't want you to know about." Maybe it's a before-and-after photo with a caption about cutting out one specific food. Maybe it's a breathless announcement that scientists have "finally discovered" the root cause of fatigue, brain fog, or belly fat.
These posts are everywhere. They're often convincing. And they're specifically designed to bypass your skepticism.
Here's a cheat sheet for slowing down and thinking before you scroll past, share, or — worse — buy.
1. Who's Actually Selling Something Here?
This is always the first question. Health content that exists purely to inform you is out there, but it's a lot rarer than content that exists to sell you something. Before you evaluate the claim itself, figure out who's making it and what they stand to gain.
Is this a brand account? A wellness influencer with an affiliate link in their bio? A website that sells the exact supplement being recommended in the article? Profit motive doesn't automatically make a claim false, but it absolutely changes how carefully you should scrutinize it. A company funding research into its own product, then promoting that research on social media, is not the same as independent scientific inquiry.
2. What Does "Studies Show" Actually Mean?
This phrase does a lot of heavy lifting in health marketing. "Studies show" could mean a peer-reviewed clinical trial involving thousands of participants — or it could mean one small, industry-funded pilot study with 22 college students that hasn't been replicated. Both are technically "studies."
When you see this phrase, look for specifics. What kind of study? How many people? Published where? You don't need to read the full paper (though that's always better), but finding the actual source and skimming the abstract takes about three minutes and tells you a lot.
3. Is This a Correlation or a Cause?
One of the most common sleights of hand in wellness content: presenting a correlation as if it's a proven cause-and-effect relationship.
"People who take Supplement X have lower rates of Y" is not the same as "Supplement X prevents Y." People who take health supplements also tend to exercise more, sleep better, and eat more vegetables. Any of those things — or all of them together — could explain the difference. This is called confounding, and it's the reason "correlation isn't causation" isn't just a nerdy phrase — it's genuinely important.
Before-and-after testimonials are the retail version of this problem. One person's dramatic transformation tells you nothing about whether the product caused it, whether they changed other habits at the same time, or whether their experience is remotely typical.
4. Has This Been Replicated?
A single study, even a well-designed one, is a beginning, not a conclusion. Science advances through replication — when independent researchers run similar experiments and get similar results. A finding that shows up in one study and never gets confirmed elsewhere is a hypothesis, not an established fact.
Health marketing loves to surf the wave of a single new study before the scientific community has had time to weigh in. Be especially cautious about claims based on research that's very recent or that hasn't appeared in major peer-reviewed journals.
5. What's the Effect Size?
Even when something is real, it might not be meaningful. A supplement might genuinely, measurably improve a biomarker — but by a fraction of a percent. That's technically a real effect. It's also basically irrelevant to your health.
Health claims often lead with statistical significance ("it works!") while burying effect size ("by this much"). These are very different things. Ask not just whether something works, but how much of a difference it actually makes in practice.
6. Is This Claim Falsifiable?
Good scientific claims can be tested and potentially proven wrong. That's what makes them meaningful. Wellness claims that are structured so that no evidence could ever disprove them — "it works differently for everyone," "you have to believe in it for it to work," "conventional medicine just doesn't understand it yet" — aren't scientific claims at all. They're faith statements dressed up in wellness language.
If the explanation for why something "works" is unfalsifiable, that's a significant red flag.
7. Are the Experts Quoted Actually Experts in This?
A cardiologist commenting on cardiac health is relevant. A cardiologist endorsing a weight-loss supplement is not necessarily meaningful — that's outside their specialty. A PhD in biochemistry sounds impressive until you notice the claim involves nutritional epidemiology, which is a completely different field.
Also worth noting: "as seen on" a major news network or "featured in" a popular magazine usually just means someone paid for placement or a segment producer thought it would get clicks. It is not peer review.
8. Does the Language Feel Like Science or Like Sales?
Legitimate health communication tends to be measured, specific, and honest about uncertainty. It says things like "may reduce risk" or "associated with" or "in this population sample."
Health marketing tends to use words like "breakthrough," "revolutionary," "ancient secret," "toxins," "supercharge," and "transform." These words are doing emotional work, not scientific work. They're designed to create excitement and urgency, not to accurately represent evidence.
The more dramatic the language, the more skeptical you should be about the substance underneath it.
9. What Are the Potential Downsides?
Every intervention — every supplement, diet, or wellness protocol — has potential downsides. Legitimate health information acknowledges this. Marketing does not. If a product or practice is presented as having zero risks, zero interactions, and zero downsides, someone is leaving something out.
This is especially relevant for supplements, which are much more lightly regulated than pharmaceuticals in the US. The FDA doesn't evaluate most supplements for safety or effectiveness before they hit shelves. "Natural" does not mean safe, and "no side effects reported" often just means no one's been systematically looking.
10. What Would Change Your Mind?
This last one is for you, not the claim. Before you commit to believing something, ask yourself: what evidence would convince me this is wrong? If you can't answer that question — if you realize you'd find a way to explain away any counter-evidence — that's worth sitting with.
Skepticism isn't just a tool for evaluating other people's claims. It's a habit you apply to your own beliefs, especially the ones you really want to be true.
The Bottom Line
None of this means you have to become a full-time health researcher or distrust everything you see online. It means slowing down a little before the belief (or the purchase) kicks in. Most viral health claims aren't outright lies — they're real findings that have been stretched, oversimplified, or stripped of context until they mean something they never quite meant.
The good news is that asking even two or three of these questions will put you miles ahead of the average social media scroller. And the more you practice, the faster it gets. Critical thinking about health claims isn't about being cynical — it's about being worth convincing.
