Let's say you're scrolling through your feed and you see a headline: "New Study Shows Daily Soda Consumption Has No Impact on Weight Gain." The article cites a real published study. There are researchers with real credentials. It sounds legitimate.

Then you notice, buried in the fine print: the study was funded by the American Beverage Association.

Suddenly, the whole thing looks different.

Funding bias is one of the most well-documented and consistently underreported problems in science communication. It doesn't mean every industry-funded study is fraudulent — many are conducted rigorously. But research consistently shows that studies funded by parties with a financial stake in the outcome are significantly more likely to produce results favorable to that funder. Understanding who's paying for the science you're reading isn't cynicism. It's basic critical thinking.

Here's how to actually do it.

Step 1: Find the Full Study, Not Just the Headline

News articles about science are almost never the primary source. They're summaries — and sometimes very loose ones. Your first move should always be to locate the actual published study.

What to do:

Red flag: If the only source for a health claim is a press release, a company website, or a news article with no study link, stop there. That's not science — that's marketing.

Step 2: Read the Funding Disclosure

Legitimate published research is required by most journals to include a funding disclosure. This is usually found at the end of the paper, in a section labeled "Funding," "Acknowledgments," or "Conflicts of Interest."

What you're looking for:

Industry funding isn't automatically disqualifying — pharmaceutical companies fund a huge portion of drug research, and that research does produce real knowledge. But it should raise your alertness level and make you want to see the study replicated by independent researchers.

Red flag: A study funded entirely by the company selling the product being studied, with no independent replication, is a weak evidence base regardless of the results.

Step 3: Check the Journal

Not all journals are equal, and the rise of predatory publishing has made this murkier than it used to be.

A useful free tool: Beall's List (available via search) tracks known or suspected predatory publishers. It's not exhaustive, but it's a solid starting point.

Step 4: Look Up the Researchers

Researchers have professional histories, institutional affiliations, and publication records — and these are all publicly searchable.

What to check:

Searching a researcher's name on Google Scholar will show their publication history. ProPublica's Dollars for Docs database (projects.propublica.org/docdollars) shows payments from pharmaceutical and medical device companies to US physicians and teaching hospitals — it's a remarkable resource that most people don't know exists.

Step 5: Ask Who Benefits

This is the broader framing question that ties everything together. Before accepting a scientific claim — especially one that's being promoted aggressively — ask: who profits if people believe this?

This applies in multiple directions:

None of this means the claim is false. It means you should weight the evidence accordingly and look for independent corroboration.

A Quick-Reference Checklist

Next time you see a health or science claim online, run it through this:

You don't need to do all of this for every piece of content you encounter — that would be exhausting. But for claims that are surprising, that contradict established consensus, or that someone is trying to sell you something based on, running through even three or four of these checks takes about ten minutes and can save you from a lot of bad decisions.

The Bigger Picture

Learning to trace funding sources isn't about becoming paranoid about science. Science, done well, remains the most reliable method humans have developed for understanding the world. But science is also a human enterprise, conducted by people with mortgages and career pressures and sometimes conflicts of interest.
