The information environment your teenager navigates every day is radically different from anything that existed even ten years ago — and the science of how young people process that information is still catching up. But here's the thing: you don't need to be a media scholar to help your kid think more clearly. You just need a few good tools and the willingness to be curious alongside them instead of just at them.
Why the Algorithm Is the Real Problem (Not Your Kid)

So when your teen encounters dubious health advice, they're not failing some basic intelligence test. Start With Curiosity, Not Correction

Instead, try genuine curiosity. "Where did you see that? What did they say exactly?" This isn't a trick — it's actually useful information. But one person's experience isn't evidence that the diet works for everyone — or that it works at all beyond placebo and calorie reduction.
What does the boring, mainstream science say? If a claim is big enough to go viral, it's usually big enough to have been looked at by actual researchers. Sites like PubMed, Snopes, and Science-Based Medicine are good starting points. The absence of mainstream support isn't always a conspiracy — sometimes it just means the evidence isn't there.
Does this make me feel like I have a secret? This one is sneaky but useful. Misinformation often comes packaged as hidden knowledge — things "they" don't want you to know. That framing is emotionally satisfying, but it's also a red flag.
Give Them Credit for What They Already Know
